Frequently asked questions

How is 'Make Smaller' different from compression?

Make Smaller tries several strategies in parallel — quality reduction, palette quantization for PNG, and (optionally) swapping the format to WEBP or JPG — then keeps whichever result is genuinely smallest. We never ship a file larger than your original.

Will it change my file format?

Only if you allow it. The 'Allow format change for smaller file' toggle lets PNG photos become WEBP/JPG, and JPG become WEBP. Turn it off to keep the original format.

What if my image can't be made smaller?

We're honest about it: you'll see 'No smaller version found' and keep your original. We suggest trying stronger reduction, resizing the image, or enabling format change.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. PNG transparency is preserved through every reduction, and if format change is allowed for a transparent image we prefer WEBP (which supports alpha) over JPG.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. All compression happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

Is the compressor free?

Yes — fully free, unlimited, no account, no watermarks.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The compressor is fully responsive and runs on any modern phone, tablet or desktop browser.
